Today marks Memorial Day in the U.S. in which we honor military men and women who died while serving the U.S. It can be a somber holiday. We will now add to that somber feeling. This blog has reached its end and will no longer be updated.
As it was predicted, Hollywood is repeating history. Much as it did with Interactual, Studios have all but abandoned BD-Live. While user interest is likely at the top of the list to explain why, the lagging global economy and low physical media sales are probably the reasons why. Studios are no enabling new discs with worthwhile BD-Live features. Those that do, like HBO with True Blood – The Second Season, simply discontinue them after sales taper off. Eventually, we at BD-Live News are going to run out of existing discs to survey or those that we haven’t yet will find all or a portion of their BD-Live content deactivated such as with Starship Troopers and others.
I will periodically check the blog to keep the existing database operational until the expiration of the hosting account sometime around June of 2012. Advertisements will also be removed. Until then, there will be no new content. Enjoy what is here while it is here. I will now fade back into the high def world and enjoy my library of BDs, DVD-As and SACDs on my soon-to-be-arriving OPPO BDP-95. Live long and in peace.

First up today, we recently learned that in keeping with the series four prior season’s on Blu-ray, Showtime’s Dexter: Season Five
will hit stores on August 16, 2011 once again bearing the BD-Live logo. In case you want to immerse yourself deeper into the show’s history, you might want to check out the novels Darkly Dreaming Dexter (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard) and Dexter in the Dark
by Jeff Lindsay although it has evolved independently of the novels which continue to add new viewers in droves. In fact, the Season 4 finale aired on December 13, 2009 to a record-breaking audience of 2.6 million viewers making Dexter the most-watched original series episode ever for the cable TV network. The lead actor, Michael C. Hall, has received several awards and nominations including a Golden Globe. Finally, it’s worth mentioning that the series was picked up by Showtime for a sixth season, with no mention of it being the final, leaving open the possibility for a seventh entry into Blu-ray high definition and BD-Live.

During the day, Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is an employee in the Miami Metropolitan Police Department’s crime lab, but he hides a secret. In reality, Dexter is a disciplined and murderous psychopath (a self-admitted “monster”), and he satisfies his blood lust at night by carefully killing the serial killers he tracks down during the day.

Good morning. First up today, in case you are unaware, BD-Live News’s special page called U2: 360° At the Rose Bowl (Blu-ray) BD-Live Content remains the only place on the entire Internet where you can view all of the content that has ever been added to the U2: 360° at the Rose Bowl [Blu-ray] disc via BD-Live and tuneHD.net. There are two new bits of information that might make you want to click over to it. First, word from DVD Intelligence that the fine folks over at the Pavement received The ‘Best British Authored Disc’ award for their work on the disc by the British Video Association’s at its 2011 annual awards night. The BVA Awards “recognises the outstanding creative and commercial achievements of companies whose performances and results throughout 2010 made them shine within the hugely
competitive video entertainment market place.” The judges had this to say on why the disc was given the award.
Great graphics and the BD Live is amazing. This is a true resource for fans. It is great to see at title using BD Live, which was a specific feature of the format. Fans will have the patience to set up the connection to the Internet. Obviously, a lot of graphics and content work went into this title. Great navigation – incredible design and high production values plus loads of extras. World class authoring, graphics, UI logic and usability all contribute to near-perfect marks. Sound and pictures very well encoded and plenty of bonus content, with BD-Live too. Almost the perfect Blu-ray!
A second reason for visiting BLN’s page dedicated to that disc, and to do so continuously over the coming months, is that U2 has begun the North American leg of the band’s world tour. You might recall that Interscope suggested around the disc’s release that additional concert footage might be added during the American tour via BD-Live. We’ve got our fingers crossed. Anyhow, congratulations to Andy Evans and everyone at the Pavement.
In other news, Justin Sluss over at high def disc news is reporting that not only does The Green Hornet 2D Blu-ray disc include movieIQ as we reported here, but also an exclusive BD-Live feature called “The Green Hornet Cutting Room”. He reports that it is a BD-Java application in Hi-Def that allows you to create your own unique video edit and then share it online via BD-Live. Sluss adds that “[t]here’s a 2 minute 17 second tutorial in Hi-Def also included to explain how things work.” We’ll bring you more about that feature as soon as we get our hands on a copy.
Next, the prolific and imaginative writers over at IGN have a post entitled “Top 25 Bonus Features”. While the is not dominated by BD-Live, it did manage to take the twenty-first spot with the BD-Live Commentary feature found on the Terminator Salvation (Director’s Cut) [Blu-ray]. Check out our survey of the disc’s BD-Live content by clicking here. Described as “[t]echnology and the classic commentary format coming together,” R.L. Shaffer noted that director McG might even have helped reshape peoples opinions of the film with comments made during the event.

Good morning. As many of you might already know, in an early announcement to retailers, Universal Studios Home Entertainment will be releasing both Director John Milius’s 1982 adventure Conan the Barbarian and its 1984 sequel Conan the Destroyer (from Director Richard Fleischer) on Blu-ray August 2, 2011. However, did you also know that the discs will be BD-Live enabled providing connectability with Deluxe Digital’s excellent pocket BLU app (advanced remote control, video timeline, mobile-to-go, browse titles and keyboard) and My Scenes which which allows you to collect your own movie clips then view and share them with buddies? We suspect they will also provide access to the Studio’s BD-Live Center. The Studio will likely officially announce the releases in the coming months but did this early to cash in on the theatrical release of Marcus Nispel’s 2011 remake.
As the sole survivor of the childhood massacre, Conan (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is released from slavery and taught the ancient arts of fighting. Transforming himself into a killing machine, Conan travels into the wilderness to seek vengeance on Thulsa Doom (James
Earl Jones), the man responsible for killing his family. In the wilderness, Conan takes up with the thieves Valeria (Sandahl Bergman) and Subota (Gerry Lopez). The trio comes upon a weird snake cult, linked to Doom, and Conan wants to trek off to Doom’s mountain retreat to kill him. But he is prevented from doing that by King Osrik (Max Von Sydow), who wants the trio of warriors to help rescue his daughter who has joined Doom in the hills.
In Conan the Destroyer, our hero is commissioned by the evil queen Taramis (Sarah Douglas) to safely escort a teen princess (Olivia D’Abo) and her powerful bodyguard (Wilt Chamberlain) to a far away castle to retrieve the magic Horn of Dagon. Unknown to Conan, the queen plans to sacrifice the princess when she returns and inherit her kingdom after the bodyguard kills Conan. The queen’s plans fail to take into consideration Conan’s strength and cunning and the abilities of his sidekicks: the eccentric wizard Akiro (Mako), the wild woman Zula (Grace Jones), and the inept Malak (Tracey Walter). Together the hero and his allies must defeat both mortal and supernatural foes in this voyage to sword-and-sorcery land.
Both discs will feature 1080p resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtracks. Conan the Barbarian [Blu-ray] will have the extended cut of the film and supplements that will include a commentary with Milius and Schwarzenegger, “Conan Unchained: The Making of Conan”, “Art of Steel: Sword Makers and Masters”, “Conan: From the Vault”, Special Effects, The Conan Archives, and Theatrical Trailers. Aside from the BD-Live features, Conan the Destroyer [Blu-ray]
will apparently not contain any extras. Have a great weekend.

May 31st and June 7th respectively. Regardless, keep in mind that once unlocked, you can view content for the film on the app anytime and anywhere on your iPhone, iPod Touch, Blackberry ( Bold 9700, 9000, Curve 8900, 8820, 8520, 8350i, 8320, Pearl Flip 8220), Android (Droid, Magic and Hero) or Nokia.
Good morning. One quick bit of news thus far today. For anime fans, Toonzone News is reporting that while there is downloadable BD-live content for Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn Vol. 2 [Blu-ray] and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn Vol. 3 [Blu-ray]
, it is apparently only accessible by users in Japan. However, according to anime news website Mania, this content appears to been limited to trailers specific for the Japanese market. On the other hand, Mania also reports that English language users get a more robust serving of content through BD-Live including episode storyboards (that were available for a limited time) and a new episode audio commentary.

Lastly, the folks over at IGN have posted a piece on what they expect for another unannounced blu-ray release. The first one that caught our eyes was called What We Want on the Jurassic Park Blu-ray which, incidentally, included the full slate of Universal BD-Live tools. They’ve done it again this time with a post entitled What We Want on the Thor Blu-ray. Their suggestion? A Marvel Movies Timeline/S.H.I.E.L.D. Database. IGN’s Cindy White describes it this way,
Another feature we’ve carried over from previous Blu-ray releases, this interactive database could reveal the hidden Easter eggs and more obvious connections between films and characters, as Marvel sets up the future Avengers movie. It wouldn’t have to cover the content just from Thor (like the cameo by Hawkeye or the Nick Fury tag at the end), either. And make it a BD-Live feature so it could be updated when Captain America comes out later this summer and well beyond.
Be sure to check out the entire post at IGN.
